THE VERMEIL METHOD

DETAILS & CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Gold vermeil or vermeil  jewellery is trend to keep an eye on. It is described as the perfect balance between quality and value for the jewellery enthusiast. When you are looking for your next fine jewellery piece, vermeil should definitely be on your list because of it’s many impressive qualities.
A common assumption is that vermeil is the same as gold plating, and even though they do share a few common attributes, however there are a number of differences namely the quality, durability, and desirability.
The main difference to note between gold plating and gold vermeil is  the thickness of the coating as well as the karat gold that is used for the covering of the piece. For instance, gold plating has a very thin layer of gold with a lower karat gold whereas gold vermeil has at least 2.5 microns thickness of gold and must be over 10kt gold to be termed Vermeil.
As you may have guessed by now, Vermeil is a French term,  and if you happen to come across silver-gilt”  jewellery, you should know that it is the same thing. In short, silver-gilt” is a sterling silver jewellery piece dipped in gold.
When a sterling silver  jewellery piece, lets say a necklace, is plated with a layer of gold, it then means that you have in your possession, a gold vermeil piece. The process that allows  jewellery makers to plate a silver piece with gold is called electrolysis.
Lily’s Gold Vermeil Jewellery consists of a thick coating of 18kt gold over sterling silver. Although gold vermeil will not tarnish as easily as silver, it may become dirty and fade slightly with wear. However, you wont believe how long your gold will last if you follow a few of our our simple golden rules.
  • Store your jewellery in your fabric pouch that you receive it in, whenever it is not being worn.
  • Remove your gold vermeil jewellery when showering, exercising and swimming (scratches and scuffs can scratch away the gold)
  • Do not wear your jewellery overnight, remove it before bed time.
  • Potions and lotions will corrode the gold coating, so always put Jewellery on after applying perfume and creams.
  • Protect your piece from bleach and harsh chemicals as exposure to these can thin the gold overlay.
